Cutout banks that compound, grayscale that survives a tired photocopier, margin added as padding rather than taken by cropping, and the reason a photograph taken in a classroom should never be uploaded to anyone's server.

Teachers make an enormous amount of visual material and almost none of it is discussed anywhere. A vocabulary matching sheet needs twelve clean object cutouts. A science handout needs a diagram that survives a worn-out photocopier. A class display needs thirty named portraits. A parent newsletter needs a photograph from sports day with three children in it whose families have not all returned the same consent form.
Every one of those has a technical answer, and several of them have a privacy answer that matters more.
The photograph you cannot upload
Start here, because it is the constraint that shapes everything else.
A photograph taken in a classroom is not an ordinary image file. Depending on where you work, it may be covered by school policy, by a data protection regime, or by a set of individual consent forms held in a filing cabinet, and those rules do not distinguish between publishing a photo and uploading it to a website that promises to delete it later. Uploading is processing.
This is the whole reason a browser-local tool matters for this job rather than being a nice extra. The images stay on the machine. The background removal model, the blur, the resize, and the export all run inside the tab. There is no upload step to think about, so there is no policy question to answer about a third party.
Two things follow practically.
Privacy Blur will find faces in an image, propose a region for each one, and let you correct that set before anything is applied. The detection is a proposal and nothing is blurred automatically. You can move, resize, delete, and add regions, including regions the detector never found, and only then apply blur or pixelation.
It is also honest about what it is not. Blurring a face is not anonymisation. A school uniform, a distinctive coat, a name on a peg in the background, the other children in the shot, and the file's own metadata can all identify someone that a blurred face does not. Treat it as one control among several, strip the metadata as well, and look at the whole frame rather than only the faces.
Cutouts for matching and sorting activities
The single most useful thing a teacher can do with a background remover is build a bank of clean object cutouts: one apple, one kettle, one bicycle, each on transparency, each reusable in a dozen worksheets.
The practical advice is unglamorous. Photograph the object against a plain surface with the object filling most of the frame, because the model has an easier job when the subject is large and the background is boring. Shoot in daylight near a window rather than under classroom fluorescents, which throw a colour cast onto white paper. Avoid shadows touching the object, because a shadow is a genuinely ambiguous case and different tools resolve it differently.
Then remove the background once, save the transparent PNG, and keep it. The value of a cutout bank is that it compounds: the fifth worksheet costs you nothing because you already have the apple.
Making it survive the photocopier
A worksheet is not consumed on a screen. It is printed, often in black and white, often on a machine that is low on toner, and often photocopied again by someone else.
Two adjustments do most of the work.
Convert to grayscale deliberately rather than letting the printer decide. The Grayscale Converter gives you grayscale, sepia, or inverted output and lets you see the result before you commit. A photocopier's automatic conversion is optimised for text, and it will frequently crush a mid-tone photograph into mud. Converting first and checking it on screen tells you whether the image still reads.
Then check contrast by looking at it, not by trusting it. A pale blue against a pale green is two distinguishable colours and one indistinguishable grey. Anything where colour carries the meaning, a key, a highlighted region, a coloured arrow, needs a second cue: a label, a pattern, a different line weight. That is good accessibility practice for the colour-blind children in the room as well as good practice for the photocopier, which is a rare case of one fix solving two problems.
Inverted output has one specific use worth knowing: a dark diagram on a light ground uses far less toner than the reverse, and inverting a light-on-dark source before printing is the difference between a legible handout and a grey rectangle.
Space to write in
Worksheet images almost always need margin that the photograph does not have. Cropping in gives you less room, not more.

A display board of thirty portraits
The job here is consistency, not perfection. Thirty cutouts that are each individually excellent but framed differently look worse on a wall than thirty that are merely good and all framed the same.
So decide the aspect ratio and the pixel dimensions first, apply them to every image, and accept a slightly loose crop on a few rather than tuning each one. If the display is going up in a corridor where parents walk past, the consent question from the first section applies again, and it applies to the whole set rather than to each photograph individually.
Documents and scans
The other half of a teacher's image work is not photographs at all. It is a scanned page, a photographed whiteboard, a worksheet from a book that needs to be legible in a handout.
Those want a different treatment from photographs. Rotate to straighten what the scanner or phone got wrong, which is lossless. Convert to grayscale, because colour adds nothing and costs file size. Crop to the content rather than the page. And strip the metadata before it goes anywhere, because a phone photograph of a whiteboard carries the GPS coordinates of the classroom.
The short version
Keep the images on your own machine, because that is the part you cannot undo. Build a reusable cutout bank instead of starting fresh each time. Convert to grayscale on purpose and look at the result. Add margin with canvas padding rather than cropping. Set the dimensions once and apply them to everything. And remember that a blurred face is one control, not a guarantee.
