Is NSS Background Remover really free?
Yes, completely free with no hidden paywalls or quality restrictions. The app is supported by non-intrusive ads. You get the same full-quality AI whether processing one image or a hundred.
Are my images private? Do you store them?
Your images never leave your device. All AI processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly and WebGPU. There is no server that receives your images — we have no ability to see, store, or access what you work with.
What image formats can I upload?
PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, AVIF, and HEIC (iPhone photos). For animated images like animated GIFs or WebP, only the first frame is processed — a notice will confirm this.
What formats can I export?
PNG (recommended for transparency), WebP, AVIF, and JPG (with a solid or gradient background). PNG and WebP preserve full alpha channel transparency. AVIF offers the best compression at equal quality.
Why does my exported PNG show a black background in Photoshop?
This is caused by premultiplied alpha — a widespread bug in free tools. NSS Background Remover exports straight (non-premultiplied) alpha. Open our export in Photoshop and you'll see a real checkerboard, not a black box. See our help article for a full explanation.
What is "true transparency" or "straight alpha"?
Each pixel in a transparent image stores a color (RGB) and an opacity value (alpha). Premultiplied alpha pre-bakes the background color into the RGB, causing black halos when compositing. Straight alpha keeps them separate. All NSS exports use straight alpha — fully compatible with Photoshop, Figma, Canva, and every professional design tool.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After your first visit, the app caches itself and runs entirely offline. AI models are also cached locally after the first download. You can install NSS Background Remover as an app on your desktop or phone for quick offline access.
How accurate is the AI background removal?
We use RMBG-1.4 (fast, ~80 MB) and RMBG-2.0 (best quality, ~180 MB) — both state-of-the-art models from BRIA AI that excel at fine details like hair, fur, and semi-transparent edges. The built-in brush editor lets you refine any imperfect areas.
Do I need to create an account?
No account, no signup, no email address — ever. An account system would require storing your data, which conflicts with our privacy-first design.
How large can my images be?
Images up to 4096 × 4096 pixels are processed at full resolution. Larger images are automatically downscaled for inference, then the full-resolution mask is upscaled back — so your export is always at your original image dimensions.
Can I process multiple images at once?
Yes. Upload up to 20 images per session. They process one at a time to preserve device memory, and you can download all results as a single ZIP file with one click.
How does the AI work? Does it use a cloud API?
No cloud API. The AI runs entirely in your browser using Transformers.js, which loads ONNX-format neural networks directly. On supported hardware, inference uses your GPU via WebGPU for fast results. On other devices it falls back to WebAssembly — slower but still fully on-device.
