Background Removal Troubleshooting

A good cutout is mostly about the edge. When one comes out wrong, the fault is almost always one of a handful of specific, fixable things. Find your symptom below, then read the section that explains why it happens and how to correct it — all in the browser, nothing uploaded.

Start with the right mode

Before touching any edge tool, make sure you are on the correct removal mode. Fast runs a lightweight model that produces a crisp yes/no mask — perfect for products, logos, and anything with a hard, manufactured edge. Best Qualityruns a heavier model that estimates partial transparency along soft edges, which is what hair, fur, and motion blur need. Jagged or stair-stepped edges

A hard mask laid over a curved subject can leave a faintly pixelated edge. In the image editor, apply Smooth to relax the boundary, then a small Feather (1–3 px is plenty for most subjects; go a little higher for soft fabric). Feather blends the last edge pixels into transparency so the outline reads as clean rather than sliced.

Soft or blurry outlines

The opposite problem is usually self-inflicted: too much feather turns a crisp subject into a ghost. Dial it back down. If the source photo itself is small or out of focus, no edge tool will sharpen it — the detail was never captured. Run it through the upscaler first to give the edge more pixels to work with, then remove the background.

A coloured halo or fringe

If a thin rim of the old background colour clings to your subject once it is on a new background, that is colour spill — edge pixels that were a genuine mixture of subject and backdrop. Run Decontaminate in the editor to un-mix them. The lasting fix is on the capture side: a neutral, evenly-lit backdrop leaves far less colour to bleed into the edge. Hair and fur look cut off

Flat, chopped-looking hair is the signature of a hard mask applied where a soft one was needed. Switch to Best Quality, which estimates how much of each wispy edge pixel belongs to the subject instead of forcing every pixel to fully-in or fully-out. “No subject found” or a blank result

The model returns nothing when it genuinely cannot tell subject from background — most often because they are too similar in colour and brightness (a grey cat on a grey sofa, a white mug on a white sweep). If the result comes back empty, the tool automatically re-runs once on the CPU path as a safety check before giving up, so a truly empty answer usually means the photo lacks the contrast to separate the two. Increase the contrast between subject and backdrop, or re-shoot against a clearly different colour. Trying the other mode occasionally helps, but contrast is the real cure.

Holes punched inside the subject

When part of your subject matches the background colour — a white shirt against a white wall — the model can read it as background and leave a hole. Open the cutout in the editor and use the restore brush to paint those areas back in. This is quick and precise, and far more reliable than fighting the model with settings.

The wrong thing got removed

If a photo has several candidate subjects, the model may keep the one you did not mean. The simplest fix is to crop tighter around your intended subject before removing the background, so there is no ambiguity about what matters.

When to stop and re-shoot

Editing recovers detail that is present in the pixels; it cannot invent detail that was never there. A heavily-compressed, blurry, or same-colour-on-same-colour photo has no signal to work with, and ten minutes re-shooting against a contrasting, evenly-lit background beats an hour of settings. Knowing when a photo is unrecoverable is part of getting good results.
