Which format should I use for photos?

WebP or AVIF give the best balance of quality and file size for photos. AVIF typically produces 20–30% smaller files than WebP at the same quality. PNG is lossless but produces the largest files.

Which format should I use for transparent images?

PNG is the most compatible. WebP supports transparency and is smaller. AVIF supports transparency with the best compression. Avoid JPEG — it does not support transparency.
