Frequently asked questions
Which sizes should I include in my favicon?
At minimum: 16×16 (browser tab) and 32×32 (taskbar / bookmark). Add 48×48 for desktop shortcuts and 256×256 for high-DPI displays. For web favicons, 16 and 32 are essential.
Does the input image need to be square?
No. The tool centres non-square images and pads with transparency. For best results, start with a square PNG so nothing is cropped.
Can I use ICO files for anything other than favicons?
ICO files are used for Windows desktop icons (.exe, .lnk shortcut icons), taskbar icons, and folder icons. For web only, you can also use a 32×32 PNG as a favicon with <link rel="icon" type="image/png">.
