Which format should I use?
WebM VP9 — best compression, supported on Chrome, Firefox, Edge. Ideal for web delivery where you can specify the format.
WebM VP8 — older open standard. Slightly larger than VP9 but supported in more legacy browsers.
MP4 (AVC/H.264) — widest compatibility across all browsers, devices, and players. Good choice for downloads and email attachments.
Note: this tool re-encodes at browser-default quality (no custom bitrate). Use the Video Compressor to encode with a specific bitrate target.
Frequently asked questions
Why does VP9 produce a smaller file?
VP9 is a newer codec with more efficient compression algorithms than H.264/AVC. At equivalent visual quality, VP9 typically produces files 20–40% smaller.
Why does the comparison take 3× as long as the video?
The tool encodes your video three times sequentially (once per format). Each pass plays through in real time. A 1-minute video takes approximately 3 minutes for all three encodings.
Which format should I use for web video?
VP9/WebM for modern browser web embeds (smaller files). MP4 (AVC) for the broadest compatibility including Safari and older devices.
Can I download all three formats?
Yes. Each format has its own download button in the results. Download any or all three.
Does it upload my video?
No. All encoding happens locally in your browser. Your video never leaves your device.
