WebM VP9 — modern, open format. Best compression, widely supported on Chrome, Firefox, Edge. Great for web delivery.
WebM VP8 — older open format. Universal browser support including Safari 14+. Slightly larger than VP9.
MP4 (AVC) — universally compatible with all browsers, devices, and video editors. Best for sharing and downloads.
Note: conversion re-encodes the video in real time using your browser's built-in codecs. The output quality depends on the browser encoder — Chrome VP9 typically produces excellent results.
Conversion re-encodes the video through the browser codec. There is a small quality cost each time you re-encode — for most conversions this is invisible at normal viewing sizes. To minimize loss, start from the highest-quality source you have.
The converter plays the video in real time to a canvas, which a MediaRecorder captures frame by frame. There is currently no faster path available in browsers without native FFmpeg access.
MP4 (AVC/H.264) is the safest choice for social platform uploads. VP9/WebM is excellent for web embeds in modern browsers.
MP4 (AVC) output is supported in Safari. WebM VP9 output is not supported in Safari — use MP4 for iOS compatibility.
No. All conversion happens in your browser. Your video never leaves your device.
Codec delivery
Conversion makes the codec/container pairing explicit so the resulting MIME type, filename, preview, and editor handoff agree.

Container choices
The clip content remains recognizable while the encoded delivery format changes.
Compatible audio is preserved or encoded for the selected output.
The extension and MIME type update with the actual output blob.
Know before you process: Transcoding lossy video can reduce quality; use conversion for compatibility and avoid unnecessary repeated passes.
