Change a Video Aspect Ratio Without Cropping Anything Out
There are exactly two ways to change an aspect ratio: throw pixels away or add space. Cropping 16:9 to 9:16 discards three quarters of the width, which is why so many auto-cropped verticals clip somebody's head. Letterbox and pillarbox padding keeps the frame, and the bars are an opportunity rather than a compromise.

You have a widescreen clip and a platform that wants a square or a vertical. There are exactly two ways to change an aspect ratio: throw pixels away, or add space. Cropping does the first. The video canvas extender does the second, adding letterbox or pillarbox padding to reach 1:1, 9:16, 16:9, 4:3 or 21:9 while keeping every pixel of the original frame.
Knowing which of the two you want is most of the decision.
Padding versus cropping
Crop keeps the frame full and loses content at the edges. It is right when the subject is comfortably centred with room to spare, and it is the only option if you genuinely cannot show bars.
Pad keeps all the content and adds bars. It is right when the framing matters: a wide landscape, a group shot where somebody is near the edge, a product with text along the bottom, any footage where the composition is the point.
Cropping a 16:9 clip to 9:16 discards roughly three quarters of the width. That is not a small trim, and it is why so many auto-cropped vertical videos have somebody's head half out of frame.
The failure mode of padding is that it looks lazy if you do nothing else with it. The failure mode of cropping is that it destroys the shot. The second is worse and harder to notice while you are doing it.
Letterbox and pillarbox
Letterbox is bars top and bottom. You get it when the source is wider than the target: 16:9 into 1:1, or 21:9 into 16:9.
Pillarbox is bars left and right. You get it when the source is narrower than the target: 9:16 vertical footage into a 16:9 frame.
Same operation, different axis. Which one you get is decided by the two aspect ratios, not by a setting.
Choose the target from the destination, not from habit
9:16 is the full-screen vertical shape for phone-first feeds. It is the most aggressive change from widescreen and the one where padding costs the most screen area.
1:1 is the compromise. A square loses less height than a vertical and still stands taller in a scrolling feed than a widescreen clip. For a 16:9 source it is frequently the better trade: smaller bars than 9:16, most of the feed benefit.
16:9 is the standard for horizontal video everywhere that is not a phone feed.
4:3 is for older or archival material, and for destinations that still expect it.
21:9 is cinematic width, usually a stylistic choice rather than a requirement.
Bars are an opportunity
The instinct is to make the bars invisible. The better instinct is to use them.
Padding creates real, safe, permanent space that no interface element is going to sit on top of and no crop is going to eat. That space is where a caption, a title, a handle or a logo belongs. Text placed in a bar is never over the subject, never competing with the picture, and never accidentally cropped by a platform that reframes your video.
This is why many well-made vertical posts are a padded landscape clip with a text block above it. That layout is deliberate, not a compromise.
Do this last
The extender changes the frame size. Anything that works on image content should happen before that.
Stabilise first, because a stabiliser crops slightly to absorb motion and it should be working with the original frame. Upscale first, because an upscaler should be reconstructing detail in the picture, not enlarging bars. Colour and filters first, for the same reason.
Pad at the end, when the picture is finished and the only remaining question is what shape the container is.
The file gets bigger, and the bars are cheap
A padded video has more pixels per frame, so the raw dimensions go up. The encoded size goes up by much less than you would expect, because flat black areas that do not change between frames are close to free for a video codec to encode. Motion and detail cost bits. Static bars cost almost none.
So the size penalty for padding is real but small, and much smaller than the quality penalty for cropping and then upscaling to recover the resolution you threw away.
Nothing is uploaded
The clip is processed on your device. For video this is the difference between a workflow you can use on client footage and one you cannot, and it also removes the upload wait entirely. The time it takes is the time the work takes.
A short method
- Decide first whether the composition survives a crop. If it does not, pad.
- Pick the target from where the video is actually going.
- For a 16:9 source headed to a feed, try 1:1 before 9:16: less lost area, most of the benefit.
- Do stabilising, upscaling and colour work before padding, never after.
- Plan to put your caption or logo in the bar, and choose the target ratio with that layout in mind.
- Watch the result full screen on a phone, which is where the bars will actually be judged.
