Convert images between PNG, WebP, AVIF, and JPG free
No re-upload, no compression surprise — convert image formats in your browser.
The problem
The web's image format landscape is fragmented. You might receive PNGs from a designer, need WebP for a CMS, and want AVIF for the smallest possible files. Converting between them shouldn't require Photoshop, Figma, or a command-line tool.
The NSS solution
The NSS Format Converter converts between PNG, WebP, AVIF, and JPG in your browser. Choose the output format and quality, see the file size before downloading. All processing is local — your images never leave your device.
How to use it
- 1
PNG → WebP for web performance
WebP is 25–35% smaller than PNG at equivalent visual quality. Convert static assets, product images, and hero images to WebP before deployment.
- 2
JPG → PNG for transparency
When you need to remove a background from a JPEG, convert to PNG first to ensure lossless processing. Or use the background remover directly — it accepts JPG input.
- 3
PNG → AVIF for maximum compression
AVIF achieves 40–50% smaller files than WebP at equivalent quality. Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+) all support AVIF.
- 4
WebP → JPG for compatibility
Some tools, printers, and older systems don't accept WebP. Convert back to JPG for universal compatibility.
- 5
Bulk format conversion for CMS upload
CMS platforms like WordPress and Shopify have preferred formats. Convert batches of images to the right format before uploading.
Step-by-step guide
- 1
Upload your image
Drag any PNG, JPG, WebP, or AVIF into the Format Converter.
- 2
Choose the output format
Select PNG (lossless), WebP (lossy or lossless), AVIF (lossy), or JPG (lossy).
- 3
Set quality for lossy formats
For WebP and JPG, adjust the quality slider. Higher = larger file but better quality. Lower = smaller file, potential artefacts.
- 4
See the size before downloading
The tool shows the converted file size before you download — so you know what you're getting.
- 5
Download
Your converted image downloads immediately. No account, no watermark.
Common questions
Does converting to WebP preserve transparency?
Yes. WebP supports full alpha channel transparency. PNG transparency is preserved when converting to WebP or AVIF. Converting to JPG loses transparency (the transparent area fills with white).
What's the difference between WebP and AVIF?
AVIF is newer and produces smaller files (roughly 20–30% smaller than WebP at equivalent quality), but requires Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, or Safari 16+. WebP has broader support (virtually all modern browsers since 2020).
Will I lose quality converting PNG → WebP?
WebP conversion is lossy by default — there is a small quality reduction. For pixel-perfect preservation, keep PNG. For web delivery where file size matters, WebP at quality 85+ is visually indistinguishable.
Can I convert multiple files at once?
The Format Converter handles one file at a time. For bulk conversion, the Batch Background Remover processes multiple images and exports WebP.
