Amazon Product Photo Requirements 2026: The Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about Amazon's image requirements for 2026: white backgrounds, resolution minimums, file formats, and common reasons for rejection.
Amazon's product photo requirements haven't changed dramatically, but enforcement has become stricter. This guide covers everything you need to know for 2026.
Main image requirements (the one that matters most)
Amazon's strictest requirements apply to the main product image — the first image customers see in search results and on the product page.
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Background | Pure white (#ffffff, RGB 255 255 255) |
| Product fill | At least 85% of the image frame |
| Minimum size | 1000 px on the longest side |
| Recommended size | 1600+ px on the longest side (enables zoom) |
| File format | JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or GIF |
| No extras | No watermarks, no props, no text, no logos |
The white background rule
The background must be pure white — not off-white, not light grey, not #fafafa. Amazon's automated systems check this, and listings with near-white backgrounds are increasingly being suppressed.
When you export from NSS, use the Background tool to set a solid colour of #ffffff before downloading as JPG. This guarantees a true #ffffff background.
The 85% fill rule
Your product must fill at least 85% of the frame. Leave small margins but don't photograph the product tiny with lots of white space around it. Crop tightly in your photo editing before processing.
Resolution for zoom
Amazon enables the zoom feature (which lets customers hover to see a magnified view) when the image is at least 1000 px on the longest side. For best zoom quality, shoot at 2000–3000 px and don't compress below 85 quality for JPEG.
Additional image requirements
Additional images (positions 2–9) are more flexible:
- Background doesn't need to be white
- Can show the product in use, in context, or from different angles
- Can include props, environment, and lifestyle photography
- Can include text overlays, comparison charts, or infographic-style content
- Must still be 1000 px+ on longest side
This is where you can show the product being used, close-up details, and packaging.
Common rejection reasons
Background isn't pure white
The most common rejection. Off-white (#f8f8f8, #fdfdf9) is still rejected. After processing in NSS, always set the background to #ffffff explicitly rather than relying on the background appearing white.
Product doesn't fill 85% of frame
Check your crop before uploading. Leave a small but consistent margin around the product.
Multiple products in main image
For variations (colour, size), each variation must have its own main image. You can't show all sizes together in the main image.
Watermarks or overlays
Any text, logos, or overlays on the main image will trigger rejection. Save those for positions 2–9.
Mannequin visible (apparel)
For apparel, you can use invisible mannequin / ghost mannequin photography, but a visible mannequin in the main image is not allowed for some categories.
File format issues
Amazon accepts JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and GIF. AVIF and WebP are not supported for upload. Export as JPEG or PNG from NSS.
JPEG vs PNG for Amazon upload
Both are accepted. JPEG is preferable for most product photos:
- Smaller file sizes (faster upload to Seller Central)
- Amazon re-compresses images anyway on their servers
- Lossless quality from NSS at export quality 90+
Use PNG if your product has hard geometric edges where JPEG compression artefacts would be visible (logos, graphics-heavy products).
Category-specific notes
Some categories have additional requirements:
- Electronics: May require multiple angles; USB ports and buttons must be visible
- Apparel: Flat lay or ghost mannequin; model images allowed as additional images in most categories
- Jewellery: White background, product against background only, no props
- Grocery/Food: Product in original packaging only for main image
Workflow for Amazon compliance
- Shoot product against any solid background (white or grey works best)
- Upload to NSS and remove background
- Open editor, set Background to solid colour #ffffff
- Export with background — choose JPEG, quality 90+
- Crop to tight margins (85%+ product fill) in your image editor
- Check dimensions are at least 1000 px (recommend 2000+)
- Upload to Seller Central
