Real-time AI virtual background — no green screen, no plugin

AI background removal on your live webcam at 10 fps, directly in Chrome or Edge. Use in OBS, Zoom, and Teams.

The problem

Virtual backgrounds in Zoom and Teams blur at the edges and struggle with hair. Physical green screens need dedicated space and even lighting. OBS plugins require installation and consume significant system resources alongside a live production setup.

The NSS solution

NSS Live Camera runs RMBG background removal on your webcam feed at approximately 10 fps, entirely in your browser using WebGPU. No plugin to install, no model to manually download. Share the browser tab as a virtual camera through OBS for use in any streaming or video call app.

How to use it

  • 1

    Virtual background for live streaming

Open /live-camera, allow camera access, choose a background, and share the browser tab via OBS Browser Source or Window Capture. Appears as a clean virtual background on stream.

  • 2

    Professional video call backgrounds

Share the NSS Live Camera tab as a virtual camera in Zoom or Google Meet using OBS Virtual Camera. No green screen, no special hardware required.

  • 3

    Branded background for webinars

Upload a branded slide or background image and appear in front of it during webinars and online presentations without leaving your office.

  • 4

    On-the-fly background testing

Test how different backgrounds look with your lighting setup before committing to a recording session. The live preview updates immediately as you swap backgrounds.

  • 5

    Privacy background for sensitive calls

Replace your home environment with a neutral or branded background during client calls or interviews to maintain professional presentation.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

    Open Live Camera

Navigate to /live-camera in Chrome or Edge. Click Start Camera and grant permission to access your webcam.

  2. 2

Wait for the AI model to load

The RMBG model downloads once (~30 MB) and is then cached in your browser. Subsequent uses start immediately without any download.

  3. 3

    Choose your background

Select a solid colour, a blur of your existing background, or upload a custom image. The processed feed updates at approximately 10 fps.

  4. 4

    Set up OBS integration

In OBS, add a Browser Source pointed at the NSS Live Camera tab URL, or use Window Capture targeting the browser window. Set OBS Virtual Camera as the camera input in your streaming or call software.

  5. 5

    Adjust lighting for best results

For cleanest edge detection, ensure even lighting on your face with no strong backlight. The AI performs best when there is clear contrast between you and your background.

Common questions

What frame rate does the Live Camera run at?

Approximately 10 fps on WebGPU-enabled browsers (Chrome, Edge). Firefox and Safari fall back to WASM inference, which runs at 2–4 fps and is suitable for slow-moving video calls but not streaming.

Which browsers are supported?

Chrome and Edge fully support WebGPU for near-real-time performance. Firefox and Safari work via WASM fallback at reduced frame rates. Mobile browsers have limited WebGPU support and may run slowly.

How do I integrate with OBS?

Add a Browser Source in OBS pointed at the Live Camera page URL, or use Window Capture targeting the browser. Enable OBS Virtual Camera, then select it as the camera input in Zoom, Teams, or your streaming application.

Does my webcam feed get uploaded anywhere?

Never. All AI inference runs locally in your browser. Your webcam footage never leaves your device at any point.
