Extract transparent images from PDF documents — page by page

Render PDF pages to images, remove backgrounds with AI, and download transparent PNGs. Free, browser-based.

The problem

PDFs often contain product images, diagrams, or illustrations embedded with white or coloured backgrounds. Extracting and isolating them in Adobe Acrobat or Photoshop requires multiple manual steps. Most free online PDF tools rasterise the PDF server-side, uploading your document to a third-party server.

The NSS solution

NSS PDF Background Remover renders each page of your PDF to a high-resolution image using PDF.js, then applies AI background removal at Low, Medium, or High strength. View thumbnail previews of every page, choose which pages to process, and download individual PNGs or a ZIP of all pages — entirely in your browser.

How to use it

  • 1

    Extract product images from catalogues

Supplier PDFs often contain product images with plain white backgrounds. Render each page, remove the background, and export clean transparent PNGs for your listing or website.

  • 2

Isolate diagrams and illustrations from documents

Technical diagrams and infographics embedded in PDFs can be extracted as transparent images and reused in presentations, websites, or design files.

  • 3

    Repurpose PDF marketing materials

Marketing PDFs from brand partners contain product shots and visual assets. Extract them with transparent backgrounds for use in your own creative assets.

  • 4

Create slide assets from PDF decks

Turn PDF presentation slides into individual transparent images for use in PowerPoint, Keynote, or web presentations where a white slide background is undesirable.

  • 5

Archive document pages as web-ready PNGs

Convert legacy PDF documents to individual page PNGs with backgrounds removed, ready for web CMS upload without the overhead of PDF rendering on the client side.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

    Drop your PDF

Go to /pdf-bg-remove and drag your PDF file onto the upload zone. The tool uses PDF.js to render all pages in the browser — no upload to any server.

  2. 2

    Wait for page rendering

Each page renders to a high-resolution image. For large PDFs (up to 20 pages), this takes a few seconds per page. Thumbnail previews appear as each page finishes rendering.

  3. 3

    Choose removal strength

Select Low (preserves text and dark content), Medium (balanced), or High (aggressive — best for plain white backgrounds). Low is recommended if the page contains text you want to keep.

  4. 4

    Preview and select pages

Click any thumbnail to preview the full-size processed result. Select individual pages or process all pages at once.

  5. 5

Download individual pages or a ZIP

Download each page PNG individually or click Download All as ZIP to get all processed pages in a single archive.

Common questions

What is the maximum number of pages?

The tool supports PDFs up to 20 pages. For longer documents, split the PDF into sections using a free PDF splitter before uploading.

What is the difference between Low, Medium, and High strength?

Low strength is gentle — it preserves dark text, fine lines, and detailed content while removing obvious white or light backgrounds. Medium is balanced. High aggressively removes all light-coloured areas, which works well for plain white product image backgrounds but may remove fine details.

Will Low strength preserve text on the page?

Yes. Low mode uses a conservative threshold that keeps dark pixels (text, lines, logos) while removing light backgrounds. It is the recommended setting for documents with mixed content.

What format are the output files?

All pages are exported as PNG with full alpha transparency. PNG is the only format that supports transparency for raster images at this quality level.
